By the end of 1944, the allies almost dominated completely the Italian peninsula, except for the North end, especially the Po river valley, which was still in German hands.

However, the end approached: the German troops became exhausted or they were removed to other fronts with few substitutions; Luftwaffe no longer dared to put in an appearance; the logistics situation deteriorated; the imminent defeat undermined the Germans morale.

On the other hand, the allies were strengthened, receiving continuous reinforcements, in spite the retreat of some units to other fronts. Their air force was smashing. The proximity of the end of the war encouraged the allied troops. Everybody knew that victory would come... but when?

In 09/12/44, the allied armies rushed to the assault, being stopped only when the winter began, in mid December. By the end of February 1945, the allies rushed again, in the Spring Offensive. The objective was the city of Bologna, an important communications center in Po valley. Its capture would allow a fast progress of the allied forces to the North, penetrating into Austria, isolating the remaining German armies still in Italy. Blocking one of the roads was a group of mountains. And among these mountains was Monte Castelo, objective of the Brazilian 1st Expeditionary Infantry Division.
