This game covers the battle of Stamford Bridfge 1066 (1 month before Hastings). Following the news of a Viking invasion in the north, Harold gathered his army and marched with remarkable speed to deal with the invaders. The Vikings had successfully defeated the local forces at Fulford, near York and there army was relaxed and spread out, with a proportion not even carrying their armour. They were astounded when Harold struck. Two of the best armies in Europe were now face to face.

The game has one scenario, though this can be modified by game options.

Orri’s Storm is a real hack and slash affair with the Saxons trying to make as much of their surprise attack as possible before the Viking can fully assemble once their reinforcements arrive. Part of the initial Viking army did not even have their armour with them and this is reflected in the game by having the Viking forces inverted so that neither player knows which units are and are not armoured.

Orri’s Storm is a low - medium complexity game, playable within a couple of hours. Special rules cover Berserker rage, unarmoured Vikings, and the arrival of Orri’s ferocious reinforcements, together with a number of optional ‘what if’ rules that consider various possibilities including mounted Saxon holusecarls and better prepared Vikings.

Morale is an important area of the game as it seeks to simulate how the rigours of battle start to cause isolated routs, which then becomes more widespread, undermining the cohesion of the army as a whole. Players will feel a sense of urgency to get the job done before the routs impact too greatly on their forces.

Gary Cole 10 10 10 Very simple game on a topic that I do not normally take an interets in. However, for the price it was a good way to learn about the battle.
