The Soviet Army's Yelnya Offensive operation (August 30 – September 8, 1941) was part of the Battle of Smolensk during the initial period of the German-Soviet War.
The offensive was against the semi-circular Yelnya salient which the German 4th Army had extended 50 km south-east of Smolensk forming a staging area for a continued offensive towards Vyazma and eventually Moscow.
While the German armies were still racing across the Soviet Union during the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa leaving the Soviets reeling, Stalin and Zhukov decided to implement their defensive strategy.
After days of probing attacks, a large scale counterattack would be launched against the Yelnya salient while Guderian was off taking his panzers south as part of another great encirclement.
While the game is intended for two players, there is no secret or hidden information preventing solitaire play.
